Disability Disclosure: If, When, and How
Sponsor: Margi Spitzer
The decision to raise the subject of a disability with a potential
employer is difficult and dicey. Determining the right technique can
be even more of a challenge. We’ll discuss:
· If: Reasons to disclose a disability to an employer, … and
reasons not to
· When: The right times to raise the subject
· How: Approaches and phrasing that work
Margi Spitzer
Margi has multiple perspectives on job interviews for people with
disabilities: as interviewer, interviewee, and coach for both. She
enjoyed a successful 22-year career in high tech while juggling her
own disabilities. She has interviewed hundreds of candidates, both
with and without disabilities, for positions ranging from individual
contributors to vice presidents. Margi delivers pragmatic,
employment-related workshops at organizations around the South
Bay (Alliance, BACED, Project Hired, SJSU, and more) for job
seekers with disabilities and their vocational counselors.
